If you are looking for a vehicle that can tow, you likely have a trailer, caravan or boat that you need to transport between two locations. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as attaching a tow bar to any vehicle and setting off towing.

You need a vehicle that is capable of towing the trailer or caravan which is why SsangYong is a great option as all models in the range are capable of towing.
SsangYong Korando towing capacity
The SsangYong Korando is an SUV that is available with either a 1.5 litre petrol engine or 1.6 litre diesel engine, both of which have different towing capabilities. The 1.5 litre petrol engine can tow up to 1.5 tonnes (delivering 280Nm of torque) whilst the 1.6 litre diesel engine can tow up to 2 tonnes (delivering 324Nm of torque).
If you need to tow a caravan, you should opt for the 1.6 litre diesel engine Korando.
SsangYong Rexton towing capacity
The SsangYong Rexton has a 3.5 tonne towing capacity and is more than capable of towing a larger caravan, a horsebox, a boat, or a trailer.
For additional peace of mind, the SsangYong Rexton has a Trailer Sway Control feature which will detect and stabilise sway of the trailer to keep you in line, especially when driving on roads with higher speed limits.
SsangYong Tivoli towing capacity
The SsangYong Tivoli is available with a petrol engine offering a towing capacity of 1-tonne towing capacity.
SsangYong Musso towing capacity
The SsangYong Musso is a pickup truck designed for performing in rugged applications and can tow up to 3.5 tonnes. As the Musso will be used for towing heavy duty trailers, the 3.5 tonne capacity makes light work of navigating tricky rural environments and getting the job done.
Driving License for Towing
If you are planning on towing a trailer, you will need to know the rules and regulations as well as which driver’s license you require in order to tow a trailer.
The rules changed at the end of 2021, meaning that if you passed your driving test on or after 1st January 1997, you can tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM.
If you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997, you are usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). View your driving licence information to check. You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

Most standard driving licenses (issued after 1st January 1997) will allow the driver to tow a trailer up to 750kg and drive a car up to 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg), providing the total combined weight of the vehicle and the trailer is no more than 4,250kg. If you need to tow more weight than this, you will need to take a category B+E test which allows you to tow up to 3.5 tonnes.
Anything beyond 3.5 tonnes will require you to take a C1E test.
Can you legally tow a caravan?
Whether or not you can legally tow a caravan will depend on when your driver’s license was issued and the weight of your vehicle and the caravan.
If your driving license was issued on or after 1st January 1997, you can tow a caravan, as long as the combined weight of both the car and caravan is no more than 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg).
If your driving license was issued before 1st January 1997, you can legally tow a caravan, as long as the combined weight of both the car and caravan doesn’t exceed 8.2 tonnes (8,250kg).
If you have taken an extended driving license which covers category B+E, you can legally tow any size trailer (if your licence was issues before 19th January 2013) or any trailer up to 3.5 tonne (3,500kg) if your license was issued on or after 19th January 2013).
What is the speed limit when towing a caravan?
If you are towing a caravan, you are subject to different, lower speed limits than you would be if you were just driving your car on its own.
Cars towing a caravan in built up areas are limited to 30pmh, which doesn’t change from those not towing a caravan or trailer. On single carriageways, vehicles towing a caravan are limited to 50mph and on dual carriageways and motorways, they are limited to 60mph.
